Following on from our fantastic pre-Cheltenham dinner at the OXO Tower on 5th March, we can announce the results of our famous tipster competition.

In keeping with tradition, our four tipsters – George Baker, Nick Luck, Jim McGrath and Richard Phillips – were asked to predict the winner of the big race on each of the four days of the Cheltenham Festival.

As is often the case, it was a close-run competition.

There were some easy pickings with short-priced favourites – State Man, Teahupo and Galopin Des Champs – winning three of the four races.

But the trophy went to the tipster who was brave enough to oppose 2-9 favourite, El Fabiolo, in the Champion Chase.

By selecting the 17-2 winner, Captain Guinness, Nick Luck took up the running on the Wednesday and was never headed.

He wins the President’s magnum of Bollinger and will hold the champion’s magnificent silver ice bucket for 12 months. His prize will be handed over at the Carbine Club’s annual cricket lunch in the Long Room at Lord’s on Monday 1 July.
